Highway 45Rolling Hills Scenic Byway

Our tour of Highway 45 starts with the Village of Andrew, home of the world's largest Mallard Duck, the new Andrew Elevator Interpretive Centre and just south is Whitford Lake with three watchable wildlife sites. Heading east on Hwy 45 and passing north of Whitford Lake take Sec. Hwy. 645 to the junction of Sec. Hwy. 857: the southwest quarter on the corner is where the famed artist, William Kurelek, was born in 1927. Explore Willingdon and the neighbouring Boian district to the east, which were settled by Ukrainians and Romanians from the Austro-Hungarian crownland of Bukovina. Next, you'll cross a small valley north of Hairy Hill, named because it was a site where bison liked to wallow when shedding their heavy winter coats. Continue on and stop to shop or golf  in Two Hills, where you can also see a monument to the Ukrainian pioneers. Afterwards, continue east on Highway 45 through scenic rolling countryside that takes you past Musidora, Morecambe and Beauvallon. Check out the uniquely painted fire hydrants in Myrnam and stop into Derwent for a meal. Their wide streets were designed for wagons, but work equally well for motor homes. Once you've reached Hwy 41, turn north to Elk Point, or south to Vermilion.

Clandonald - The Little Hamlet with Lots of Heart

Clandonald is situated in the County of Vermilion River in East Central Alberta, two kilometres south of Hwy 45 or ten kilometres east of Hwy 41.
An active small-town business sector and community groups host many events throughout the year.  One of the main events in Clandonald is the Country Fair held in August, which is like the old-time country fairs.  There is free admission to everyone from young to old.

Over the last several years, the agricultural grounds have been upgraded with a bandshelter, concession booth with washroom facilities, and campsite building.  A modern hall holds many of the community’s social functions.  It has added facilities of six power-and-water RV sites, dumping station and a ball diamond.  The Arena is used year round for skating, outdoor education, 4-H activities and more. Although Clandonald is small in size, it does live up to its motto “The Little Hamlet with Lots of Heart”.

Willingdon – Ukrainian & Romanian Culture

Willingdon has a rich Ukrainian and Romanian cultural history.  The area was largely settled by these farmers and so to honor them a museum was constructed 5 km east of the town in the Historic Boian District, featuring St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church and a museum dedicated to local Romanian pioneers.  The Willingdon Tourist Park is a great place to visit for information and camping facility with full hook-up and showers.  The Historical Village & Pioneer Museum at Shandro has numerous buildings and artifacts that date back to the early 1900’s.  It is a must see when visiting in the Willingdon area.

Marwayne - Angles for Success

Marwayne is located just 10 minutes north of the Yellowhead TransCanada Highway, at the intersection of Highway 45.  We are a community of friendly people with a small town atmosphere.  Stop and see our volunteer “Welcome Triangle”.  The tamarack flagpole was a gift from J.J. Culford to the Village back in 1940 and came by team and wagon.  Turn off Hwy 897 into our downtown core.  Stop for a cup of coffee or cappuccino, visit our craft and gift shops, or have a meal at one of our restaurants.   Have a look at the first cement elevator built in Canada, the Cargill Elevator.  The Village offers the highest quality of services for its residents and visitors.  Marwayne is very proud of its volunteers and strong community-minded citizens.  Looking for camping overnight or for the month?  We have full service sites at the Park beside the area.  Showers and a dumping station are available.  Or you can continue 10 minutes north on Hwy 897 for a real adventure at Jubilee Regional Park (Lea Park).  You can enjoy camping, golfing, fishing, jet boat tours and the annual Lea Park Pro Rodeo in June.  For excellent views of the North Saskatchewan River climb to the top of Snake Hill which also overlooks all of Lea Park.  Nearby Marwayne you can also go for trail rides or enjoy the local art & artisans of the Wild Rose Trail.
