Highway 28 – Culture, Lakes & Trails Scenic Byway

Heading north from Edmonton, passed the Canadian Forces Base at Namao, and crossing the Sturgeon River explored by David Thompson in the early 1800s, enter the Kalyna Country interpretive area by the Town of Bon Accord. Take a side trip down Lily Lake Road for some berry picking or even further to experience the charm of the Lily Lake Village Resort. Returning to Hwy 28 continue to the picturesque Town of Gibbons at the junction of Hwy 28A. Play a round of golf at "The Goose" before proceeding on to Redwater. Be sure to stop at the marker commemorating the Kimura Lake Japanese Settlement before heading into town to pick up supplies, see the world's largest Oil Derrick, or visit the excellent local museum. The next stop on your trip should be the village of Radway, where the Krause Grain Elevator is currently being restored. Backtrack a little and head north on Hwy 63 and then west on Hwy 18 to Thorhild, the Sunflower Village, enjoy their 40th Anniversary Rodeo on the Canada Day long weekend. Further north on Hwy 63 you will find the home of the soon to be restored Newbrook Observatory and enjoy the recreation at nearby Long Lake Provincial Park. Head back to Hwy 28 and you will come to Waskatenau, a great place to eat and gas up before cresting the bend on the highway that offers an inspiring panorama of the Smoky Lake townsite, the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta. See if you can count the five onion-domed churches within view, then slip into town to check out the specialty shops, art gallery at the railway station and museum by the Agricultural Complex. South of Smoky Lake don't miss the Victoria Settlement Provincial Historic Site, home of the oldest building still on its original site in Alberta. Heading west again on Hwy 28, take a slight detour north to see Bellis, then make sure you do the Main Street and Monumental Mushrooms in Vilna. After that, follow Hwy 28 south of Ashmont to St. Paul to see the UFO Landing Pad. Head east to Hwy 41 and south to Elk Point to see larger than life explorer, Peter Fidler. You'll enjoy the drive down scenic Sec. Hwy 646 - visit Fort George and Buckingham House Interpretive Centre, a former Fur Trading Post. Take a tour of the Windsor Salt Plant at Lindbergh and enjoy the scenic surroundings of historic Heinsburg and area.

Gibbons – The Community of Choice

You will find all you need in Gibbons to live, work, and play.  Educational, health care, and religious institutions, service clubs, community organizations, and numerous recreational facilities add to the quality of life here.  Experience the history of the area at the Sturgeon Historical Society’s Museum.  Go golfing at the Goose Hummock Golf Resort.  “The Goose” is an 18 hole championship course.  It is a combination of Scottish and Everglades architecture that twists and turns for over 6600 yards.  Goose Hummock is must to play when in the area.  Be a part of this friendly little town, if only for a day.

Goodfish Lake - Whitefish Lake First Nation
 
Modern day Whitefish Lake Band is a progressive Band located in and around the community of Goodfish Lake, 4 miles east and 10 miles north of Vilna.  Goodfish Lake Development Corporation has numerous business interests in the region.  Events in the community include the Pow Wow held mid June and the Goodfish Lake Treaty Days & Rodeo, their major event in early July.  The community is situated by beautiful Whitefish Lake amidst rolling hills and serene wilderness.  Paradise Cove Resort is located on the shores of Whitefish Lake, offering complete facilities for camping, fishing and recreation.

Glendon - Home of the World’s Largest Pyrogy
 
Visitors are always welcome in Glendon, the pyrogy capital of the world.  Located just 8km north of Hwy 28 on Sec. Hwy 882, the Village of Glendon hosts some of the region’s best summer activities with thousands of visitors coming out to see all the action.  Car & truck enthusiasts flock to Glendon on the 2nd & 3rd weekends of August for Derby Daze and Glendon’s Cruise Nite. 
 
Pyrogy Park ... home of the world famous pyrogy, is a great place to stop by for a picnic, and of course, a picture in front of the world’s largest pyrogy.  There is a play area for children, fresh water, a trailer dumping station and camping stalls if you’d like to stay over.  Visitors and their cameras are welcome every day of the year, but on the September long weekend, the Village really celebrates.  The Pyrogy Festival brings together music, Ukrainian dancing and culture and the infamous pyrogy eating contest.  Many recreation and fishing lakes surround Glendon, a full-service community.  And like the Pyrogy Song says, “Make sure you tell your friends that in Glendon the fun never ends.”

Bon Accord – A Great Place to Meet

Morinville - Filled with History & Recreation

The Town of Morinville derives a rich and varied historical presence in the Edmonton Capital Region Area and in the Province of Alberta. Located on Hwy. 2, a quick detour off Hwy. 28.
Morinville has strong Francophone roots and has evolved into a strong, independent multi-cultural community. The settlement history of Morinville began 14 years prior to the entrance of the Province of Alberta into Confederation, 1905. Legal – National Capital of French Murals

Only 20 minutes north of St. Albert on Highway 2, a detour off Highway 28 you'll find a tourist's delight.  Legal is the home to a vast collection of murals that depict the cultural history of the area, found on the sides of buildings around town.  People come from across Alberta to revive the French culture during the annual "Fete Au Village" festival held the last week in July. French-Canadian cuisine, a parade, demolition derby, and chilli cook-off are all part of the festivities. Radway – A Serene Farming Community

Approaching Radway, you can see the gleaming white walls of the Krause elevator, which is being restored as a registered historic site, and the steeple of a Roman Catholic Church.  The town has a great deal of history behind it, and it shows in most of the attractions found here.  Among Radway’s businesses and services you will find a grocery store, hotel, bank, laundromat, toning and tanning gym, and a bowling alley, plus a post office, library, school, health care centre, senior’s drop in centre, and three churches.  The Country Memories Teahouse and Gifts has been described as a jewel within the community.

Waskatenau – Country Life at its Best

This is a great place to take a picture of a disappearing part of our Alberta heritage.  Take a snapshot of the wooden trestle that was erected in 1919 when the CNR opened its line from Edmonton to St. Paul, still standing in its original location.  Evenings or early mornings can yield beautiful sunrise and sunset photo opportunities.  Also located in Waskatenau is the Pine Creek Campground that has camping stalls, a camp kitchen, fire pits, picnic tables, shower facilities and ball diamonds.  Nearby on the Victoria Trail, visit the R.C.M.P Memorial Statue that is 12 feet wide, 14.5 feet high, 1 inch thick plated steel and was erected by the Victoria Home Guard Society in 1998.  This progressive community offers a number of businesses, community groups, and activities for both its residents and visitors.

Kikino – Métis Culture & Recreation

 
In the Cree language of our Native Ancestors “Kikino” means “Our Home”.  Kikino Metis Settlement is proud to credit Adrian Hope with reviving the movement for the betterment of Metis People since his involvement in the early 1930’s.  When Adrian settled in Kikino, his first residence was a log cabin he built on the shores of Whitefish Lake.
 
With his legacy it is here that a site of natural beauty on the tranquil shores of Whitefish Lake has been developed as the Silver Birch Resort.  The Resort is owned and operated by the members of the Settlement since 1988.
 
Four log cabins are fully equipped for year round enjoyment and sleep six people.  A new duplex-style, modern frame cabin is also available.  It sits above the other cabins overlooking the beach and lake.  The private yard and attached deck complete this getaway cabin experience.

Bellis – Scenic Kubasa Canyon

The Bellis area is known to be excellent for its blueberry and bog-cranberry picking.  The sandy soil in the area provides a firm walking surface, even after it has rained.  The Heritage Corner Shoppe on Main Street is a wonderful little store offering unique gifts and crafts.  A quaint, little lake good for fishing for perch and rainbow trout is Bellis Beach Lake.  The campsite is well treed and well maintained by the Smoky Lake County.  Travel through Bellis to reach Kaduk Lake, another wonderful spot for camping and fishing.

Vilna – Famous For Its Mushrooms

Visit the world’s largest Mushrooms in Vilna.  This monument was erected to represent the popularity of mushroom picking in the area.  Some of the events held here are the Annual Fall Fair and the Vilna Farmer’s Market, both offer a variety of activities for the whole family.  The village also offers grocery stores, restaurants, banking services, shopping facilities, and bed and breakfasts.

Elk Point – Follow Peter Fidler’s Footsteps

The town of Elk Point is located on Highway 41, just south of Highway 28 in the midst of farm fields rich with heavy crude oil and is cradled among green rolling hills on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River.  From furs to pemmican, grain and meat, to salt and oil, the area has a colourful history of multicultural history.  A 100-foot-long Historical Mural, traces the people, places and events that contribute to Elk Point’s heritage.  Southeast of the town you will find Fort George Buckingham House Interpretive Centre.  This unique display of trading history is sure to engage your interest.  Another historical marker is the massive wooden monument honouring the explorer and map maker, Peter Fidler.  For a closer look at industry in the area, plan a tour of the Canadian Salt Company, located in Lindbergh.  For history, culture and great scenery, Elk Point is a must see.

Heinsburg – Take a Wagon Trek

Nestled on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, Heinsburg boasts an ever-changing view of the scenic valley running through Kalyna Country.  Some of the activities offered in Heinsburg are the monthly old time country music jamborees, the Railway Theme Park and Water Tower Campsite.  Check out the 4S Enterprises for a pioneer experience re-created and demonstrated.

Saddle Lake
 
Saddle Lake Cree Nation is located approximately 175km northeast of Edmonton amidst some of the most beautiful countryside in Alberta.  It is an amalgamation of 4 tribes with a population near 6,000 people.  It borders on the North Saskatchewan River and has excellent tourism potential.  It is a progressive First Nation and recently created Peyasew Management Ltd. to oversee the band’s business sector.  The band owns ten different businesses, some of which have undergone modern renovations.  A new motorcoach tour bus service is available for rent by any group on or off the band.  Development of a grocery store and shopping center is also planned in the near future.  This past year, a log home building and employment project successfully built a log home which will be the head office for the newly created bison ranch with over 80 head of bison.  It is located just off Highway 652, 5 km east of the community.
 
You are welcome to visit the Saddle Lake Plains Cree Artisans training program and giftshop.  On site you will see authentic cree arts and crafts being made with a variety of beautiful handcrafted quality products for sale.  Saddle Lake Cree Artisans are known world-wide.  Many of Stewart Steinhauer’s incredible stone sculptures are on display in the town of Banff.
 
In June, 2005, a special tourism attraction was erected.  The steel sculpture (pictured on this page) is dedicated to Saddle Lake Cree Nation’s people and it symbolizes the bands efforts to continue moving forward in a progressive manner while keeping with the cultural and traditional identity of the Cree Nation.
 
Saddle Lake Museum is located on the second floor of the Manitoukihew Centre.  It showcases both ancient and more modern expressions of the native experience.  It also possesses a sampling of traditional cree objects associated with the once flourishing fur trade and an impressive display of wildlife taxidermy.  Plans for the future of the museum include moving into a stand-alone log building which will also be a computerized and interactive Cree Interpretive Centre showcasing the history and cultural traditions of the cree nation.

St. Albert - Step into our Rich History
 
St. Albert, located on Hwy 2, the northwest border of Edmonton, is a vibrant city of 56,000 people.  St. Albert is Alberta’s fifth largest city and has the distinction of being the oldest non-fortified community in Alberta.  St. Albert is a delight to visit and offers a variety of activities to keep the whole family happy.  It is a great starting point before heading into Sturgeon County or down Highway 28 Northeast of Edmonton.
 
Red Willow Park offers over 40km of multi-use trails as well as five major park areas.  Woodlands water play park has a series of structures and water toys that will entertain young children for hours.  Beach volleyball and a skateboard park will keep the rest of the family entertained.  The trail system allows you to discover Big Lake and the newly created Lois Hole Provincial Park.  The park contains the former Big Lake Natural Area.
This area is home to over 235 species of birds, and offers you an extraordinary opportunity to discover nature.  If you enjoy fishing, Lacombe Lake is stocked annually.
 
Discover St. Albert’s rich agricultural history with a visit to St. Albert Grain Elevator Park.  Built in 1906 and 1929 these majestic monuments to the past still grace the skyline.  The St. Albert Train Station, located beside the grain elevators, is a new attraction that will help you relive the past.  Mission Hill depicts the history of St. Albert and is home to Father Lacombe Chapel, a provincial historic site, built in 1861.
 
On Saturdays don’t miss the St. Albert Farmer’s Market, the largest in Western Canada!  A treat to visit twelve months of the year is the St. Albert Botanic Garden, home to the largest natural established rose garden in Alberta, and Hole’s Greenhouse.  Downtown St. Albert, the Arts & Heritage District is a visitor’s paradise.  Unique shops and great restaurants are nestled amongst restored buildings, murals and works of art.  While downtown you can visit Profiles Public Art Gallery, the Musee Heritage Museum, and the Michif Cultural & Resource Institute.

Modern day Whitefish Lake Band is a progressive Band located in and around the community of Goodfish Lake 4 miles east and 10 miles north of Vilna.  Goodfish Lake Development Corporation has numerous business interests in the region.  Events in the community include the Pow Wow held mid June and the Goodfish Lake Treaty Days & Rodeo, their major event, held in early July.  The community is situated by beautiful Whitefish Lake amidst rolling hills and serene wilderness.  Paradise Cove Resort is located on the shores of Whitefish Lake offering complete facilities for camping, fishing and recreation.
