Kalyna Idol 2011 - A Success!
The 5th annual contest; a joint effort by Kalyna Country and Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village; uncovered amazing, untapped talent within our region much to the delight of the day’s crowd who joined the contestants at the Ukrainian Village, September 11th. The afternoon held memories of last year when returning winners Jade Lysyk, Katelyn Borle and Ky Babin entertained while the judges deliberated. The day, although grey, was bright and sunny inside the big red barn as the youth of our region took to the stage to the rousing applause of an enthusiastic room packed crowd.
Sundays’ concert concluded with the Junior’s winners of Ashlyn Ganske – 1st Place, Brendan Guy - 2nd Place and Gabriel Lappa– 3rd Place. Followed by Intermediate winners of Tanya Bombak – 1st Place, amy Colling – 2nd Place and Rebecca Lappa – 3rd Place.
This brought the total prize winnings to over $1000 handed out.
The Kalyna Idol contest was open to amateur vocalists who are residents of east central Alberta. Each contestant was asked to sing one song of their choice and the judges made their selection based on vocal ability, performance, stage presence and overall talent.
Many thanks to our MC, Mr. Dick Bell from CFCW who showed his showmanship with professional handling of the stage and entertainers. Another big "thank-you" to the returning panel of judges – Ray Sauer, Director of Kalyna Country and 30 year veteran of the music business, Terry Kubin, lifetime singer and music teacher and Erin Gott, singer and music instructor. Their task is not an easy one with so much wonderful talent and we appreciate their professionalism.
