Kalyna Idol Search a Success!

The third annual contest; a joint effort by Kalyna Country and Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village; uncovered amazing, untapped talent within our region much to the delight of the two day crowd who joined the contestants at the Ukrainian Village, September 19th and 20th. Alberta Arts Day, September 19th played host to the competition along with many other Art Displays at the Village including wood crafting, painting, sculpture, photography, pysanka making to name a few. The afternoon held memories of last year when returning winners Stacey Cox and Cassidy Zahar entertained while the judges deliberated. The day ended with the announcement and invitation to return the following day to listen to the winners' concert and join in the Harvest of the Past and A Taste of Heritage.

Sundays’ concert showcased the Junior’s winners of Stephanie Taylor from Lamont – 1st Place, Micki-Lee Smith from Fort Saskatchewan – 2nd Place and Carissa Fedoruk from Vegreville – 3rd Place. Followed by Intermediate winners of Nina Laderoute from Mundare – 1st Place, Ky Babyn from St.Paul – 2nd Place and Tanya Bombak from Vegreville – 3rd Place. To round out the show both contestants from the Open category returned, Bob Ashmead from Vegreville – 1st Place and Tammy Farkes from Edmonton – 2nd Place.

This brought the total prize winnings to over $1000 handed out.

The Kalyna Idol contest was open to amateur vocalists who are residents of east central Alberta. Each contestant was asked to sing one song of their choice and the judges made their selection based on vocal ability, performance, stage presence and overall talent.

Many thanks to our returning MC, Mr. Nick Gulka from CFCW who delighted the crowd with his enthusiasm, and hilarious references to everything Ukrainian, and to the panel of judges – Ray Sauer, Director of Kalyna Country and 30 year veteran of the music business, Terry Kubin, lifetime singer and music teacher and Maryanne Gibson, President/CEO of Global Country.

It was a beautiful fall weekend for the outdoor venue the Ukrainian Village provides and greatly enjoyed by all this late in the year.  Arts Day, Harvest of the Past and A Taste of Heritage were a huge success to the crowd of 3700 over the weekend. An added bonus to all those attending was the free admission to Arts Day activities for the weekend suggested by the Alberta government.
