For the fifth straight year communities in Lamont County are rolling out the welcome mat, throwing open the doors and inviting all to come and visit. So what can you expect if you travel to this area during Doors Open June 5th & 6th?
If you travel to Lamont County—Church Capital of North America—it goes without saying that you are invited to visit all or some of the 30 plus host churches participating in the event, including three on site at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (regular admissions apply). Church leaders will be on hand at each site to showcase the history, architecture and highlights of their church. Of note is the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (Bukowina) near the hamlet of Wostok that is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. In Bruderheim you’re welcome to tour the Moravian Museum housed in the original 1896 log church. In Andrew, you can visit the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Bissell Memorial United Church and the Full Gospel Church. And while no admission is charged at any church or museum, they will graciously accept any donations to help with the ongoing upkeep of these sacred historic sites.
Lamont County has prepared a Church Tour Booklet that provides self-guided tours of all County churches; with a short history and contact information.
Most communities in the County are hosting other events in conjunction with Doors Open. In Andrew and Lamont, you can check out the Town-wide Garage Sale; the Saturday Andrew Farmers’ Market with extended hours; the Andrew Elevator Interpretative Centre and annual plant sale. On Sunday, June 6th the ever-popular Chipman Car Crafters Show & Shine is on. New this year will be a Coyote Run Motorcycle Poker Rally and Car Crunch on Saturday organized by the Chipman Fire Department.
In Mundare, the Basilian Fathers Museum will open especially for the weekend. In addition to the church, the Grotto and Little White Chapel will be open for tours. In St. Michael, be sure to come to the Hall for a Pyrogy Lunch Saturday and Sunday put on by the Kalyna Country Performing Arts Society. Also on site will be a two day Art Show and Sale featuring local and regional artists and supported in part by AlbertaHUB whose mandate is to promote cultural and artistic life and create networking opportunities for the region’s artists and art groups.
None of this would be possible without the generous sponsorship of Lamont County, Travel Alberta, Servus Credit Union (Lamont), and the Villages of Andrew and Chipman and Kalyna Country Tourism.
