The Village of Waskatenau, of nearly 300 residents, just a one hour drive from Edmonton, located on Highway 28, welcomes all visitors to the community. Waskatenau is a progressive community that offers a number of businesses, community groups and activities for its residents. Prior to being called Waskatenau, the area was known as Pine Creek. In 1919 when the CNR opened its line from Edmonton to St. Paul, Waskatenau received a new wooden trestle which is still standing today, and makes for a great photo opportunity. This point of the old rail line is now the western trailhead for the Iron Horse Trail, which heads east for 260 km of multi-use activities. Just south of Waskatenau near the North Saskatchewan River is The Victoria Trail - the oldest road in Alberta, leading to the Victoria Settlement. Near Waskatenau located 15 km east from Hwy 831 along the Victoria Trail is the RCMP Memorial Statue. This statue is 12 feet wide, 14.5 feet high, 1 inch thick plated steel and was erected by the Victoria Home Guard Society in 1998.
