Prairie history comes alive as you explore the Wainwright Museum, located in our original CNR train station. Share the stories of our pioneers, prisoners of war, military and the railway. Aboriginal buffalo hunters, Hollywood movie crews, dedicated wildlife conservationists, long-suffering homesteaders, and moonshine-swilling prisoners of war - these are a few of the true stories that will captivate you with Buffalo Adventures day trips. Don’t forget to make tracks to the Battle River Train Trestle, the second longest train trestle in Canada as well as the Wainwright Rail Park – home to many CN artifacts as well as a model steam-era train.
Historic Downtown Wainwright feature a collection of beautifully restored heritage resources including a business district of 1929 era buildings. Anchored in the centre of downtown is Wainwright’s free standing Memorial Clock Tower. This “Roman Tower” architectural monument built in 1925 was one of the only structures left standing after the Great Fire of 1929. Our flower-filled Main Street, courtesy of Communities in Bloom, has a vibrant collection of shops, boutiques and services that provides a shopping experience for all to enjoy. Downtown Wainwright has a flavor of its own. An array of eateries features cuisine from around the globe as well as from our own backyard. Many of our restaurants and cafes are located in heritage buildings with décor tailored to embrace the stories our town through historic photos and memorabilia.
Wainwright is the Buffalo Capital of Canada. Stop and take your photo at Canada’s largest Buffalo Statue and stop by the Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock and see the live bison herd at the gates to C.F.B. Wainwright.
Visit our newly restored pump jack in Petroleum Park or enjoy Wallace Park with its walking trails, picnic tables, benches and playground surrounded by 3 connecting ponds. Bring your rod… the ponds are stocked with rainbow trout each spring!
Sports are a plenty at the Peace Memorial Multiplex with its 2 NHL-sized ice surfaces, an indoor running track and indoor climbing wall. The attached Communiplex houses an indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, weight room, squash and racquetball courts as well as a performing arts theatre. Hockey, figure skating, curling, cross-country skiing and sledding are just a few of the winter-sports that keep our community warm throughout the winter season. In the summer, our many parks, playgrounds, outdoor sports venues, golf course and even model-airplane flying keep everyone from toddlers to seniors entertained throughout the season.
For our outdoor enthusiasts camping, fishing and hunting are abundantly found in and around Wainwright.
