Travel back to yesteryear... when the first residents of Vegreville moved their town site in order to be closer to the vital railway line. The year was 1905, the men were in their top hats and the ladies in their long dresses and the air was filled with excitement about the opportunities that were coming with the railway. You can relive this enthusiasm for yourself when you walk along the sidewalks of Historic Downtown Vegreville. You will notice diamond-shaped plaques, telling of different events and history since 1905. Lining the streets are specialty shops in buildings constructed during the early 1900’s.
At the corner of 50th Street & 50th Avenue in downtown Vegreville, is the Rotary Rendevous Park, containing a large mural, gazebo and rest area with flower gardens. The mural represents the history of the town. Vegreville is especially beautiful in summer as a participant in the Communities in Bloom program.
Be sure to visit the Vegreville Regional Museum, located just 1 km east of Vegreville on Hwy 16A which chronicles Vegreville and area's history since the 1890’s. Agricultural implements & tools, household items, photos and many other aspects of community life, past to present, are featured. Of special interest is the Rt. Hon. Donald Mazankowski, P.C. Collection covering 25 years of distinguished public service of the former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. The museum is also home of the Vegreville and District Sports Hall of Fame. The museum hosts their annual fall community Threshing Bee. It includes demonstrations and displays including classic cars and farm machinery.
A few steps away is the Rotary Peace Park, a relaxing spot for families, featuring a “Peace Grove” of twelve trees, dedicated to promoting world peace through tourism. This internationally recognized Peace Park is a great place for a picnic or a quiet lunch with family in the serenity of the outdoors. There is a large picnic area and shelter with fireplace. The Park can be reserved for private functions. This is a joint project of the Rotary Club of Vegreville and the County of Minburn.
Down the road from the Rotary Peace Park you can stop and admire Our Lady of the Highway Shrine maintained by the Knights of Columbus for travelers. Our Lady is beautifully sculpted from Italian White Marble and is the only shrine of its kind in Canada. Behind the monument are exquisitely marked stones, displaying the stations of the cross in a tranquil park setting.
Across the highway you’ll see our internationally renowned Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg), representing Prosperity, Life, Good Fortune, and Eternity. Some of the first settlers in 1898 were Ukrainian, building homesteads west of the town site. However, the Ukrainian Egg, located at the Elks/Kinsmen Park, was built as a monument in honor of the RCMP, symbolizing the peace and security the RCMP brought to the community.
Next to the World’s Largest Pysanka is the Visitor Information Centre and the Vegreville Municipal Campground and Elks/Kinsmen Park. Campground facilities were upgraded to include 30 amp power. Let the kids go trout fishing at the stocked pond, stretch their muscles in the playground area or let them loose on the skateboard park. Take a walk on a path beside the winding Vermilion River which is part of the Community Linked Trail System. Walk, hike or bike around Vegreville.
Check out the 177 foot Twister Waterslide. It is located at the Aquatic & Fitness Centre along with a swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, fitness room and racquetball court. The facility can be booked for private functions and parties. Attached to the centre is a full-sized indoor ice arena. Nearby is the curling rink in the Multiplex Building. Play a game of tennis on the newly resurfaced courts across the street from the Aquatic & Fitness Centre.
If you're into sports challenge yourself to a round of golf at the Vegreville Kinsmen Golf Course. The course has undergone some major renovations to meet the needs of golfers of all levels. The 9 hole course has expanded water hazards, added berms and impressive landscaping throughout. Along with newly developed greens and tee boxes, a short game practice area has been added to complement the driving range. Relax in the lounge after a round of golf and look out over our majestic first hole which will give you a taste of some of the stunning scenery the course has to offer. The golf course also offers a full service pro-shop complete with all the golfing necessities.
For fishing try the Rainbow Park Reservoir, located on the south side of town on Hwy 16. It is a 40-acre man-made lake, stocked annually by Alberta Fish and Wildlife. While there, enjoy the beautiful birds of numerous species.
Winter activities in Vegreville include the ever popular hockey, curling and snowmobiling, as well as other seasonal sports. Year round there is always an activity or a club to be involved with. Each February the Vegreville Wildlife Federation hosts a very popular Gun & Home Based Business Show which supports various community facilities. Stop into the year-round Farmers’ Markets held every Friday morning at the Elks Hall.
In December, downtown Vegreville becomes a winter wonderland with decorated Christmas trees, Christmas Lite-up and parade.
