The French culture is alive and well in Legal. In 1894 some of the first settlers from France started homesteading in the area. Soon many others followed, mostly from Quebec, and the community was formed. Today, Legal is known as the National Capital of French Murals and is home to the vast collection of 33 murals that depict the cultural history of the area, found on the sides of buildings around town. This year interpretive panels will be located next to all murals so you can learn the story behind each mural on a Self-Guided Mural Tour. Each year more murals go up around the community for visitors to enjoy. For more information on the Legal Murals contact Centralta Tourism Society at 780-910-1871. In addition to touring the beautiful murals around the town, visitors come from across Alberta to revive the French culture during the annual "Fete Au Village" festival held the last week in July. French-Canadian cuisine, a parade, demolition derby, and chili cook-off are all part of the festivities.

Legal is also the location of several innovative and productive industries including the “pea butter” plant that provides an alternative for those allergic to nuts. Take the family for a tour of this unique factory. The Tire Recycling Plant is another interesting place to see.

The rolling topography surrounding Legal makes for excellent facilities for outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. Don't forget to drop in to Citadel Park - an indoor/outdoor 12-acre recreation area. Legal offers all the necessary amenities to make your stay a pleasant one. Only 20 minutes north of St. Albert on Hwy 2, Legal is a tourist’s delight.
