Welcome to the Town of Gibbons ‘a community rooted in family’. Located along the picturesque Sturgeon River Valley, at the junction of Highway 28 and 28A, only 5.6 km. from Alberta's Industrial Heartland, Gibbons is only 15 minutes northeast of the city of Edmonton.

Gibbons was settled in 1895 when William Reynolds Gibbons built his first home along the Sturgeon River. The Gibbons home soon became the first stop on the Athabasca Landing Trail. On February 29, 1916 a new railroad station was opened with the unveiling of a shingle “Gibbons” a tribute to the memory of one of Alberta's Great Pioneers.

The 2009 National Communities in Bloom winner Gibbons has, over the years, transformed itself from a hamlet, to a village and then in 1959 to a town. A municipality committed to co-operative planning Gibbons offers an exceptional family orientated community for its residents. It is a progressive community that strives to maintain its small-town atmosphere and remain rooted in family as it transforms into a self-sufficient, suburban community.

Encompassing everything you need to live, work and play Gibbons boasts a diversity of housing styles to fit all lifestyles including condominium style housing, affordable family orientated housing and acreage size properties. The town offers exceptional educational, health care, religious institutions, service clubs, community and cultural organizations, as well as numerous recreational facilities which enhance the quality of life in the community.

Gibbons riverside Echo Glen Park is rich in history. You can walk the 2 km walking trail (part of the Athabasca and TransCanada Trails) along tracks used by the freight wagons to bring goods from Fort Edmonton to Athabasca Landing in the late 1800's. Residents and visitors can fish for trout in the stocked fish pond, share a picnic in the park or just enjoy the unmatched scenery.

The town also enjoys numerous other recreational opportunities including playgrounds, a skate park, tennis courts, an ice arena and curling rink, as well as a cool spray park and a community ice cream stand for those hot summer days.

Family day, February 13th, starts the year with a day of crafts, games and a dance for all ages. Early spring (May 15th) families gather for the annual Gibbons Museum’s Chicken Dinner and Silent Auction.

July 1st, each year, the community comes together to commemorate Canada’s birthday with lots of fun events to celebrate the past and present. The Tour de l’ Alberta races through Gibbons on July 16th.

Throughout the summer months venders converge on the Curling Rink, on Thursdays, to sell their wears and home grown produce at the Gibbons Farmers Market. History comes alive at the Sturgeon River Historical Society's Museum located at 4723 - 48 Avenue, in the centre of Gibbons. Open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am - 6 pm the museum offers many special events through out the year. For more information phone 780-923-3503.

The second Saturday in September, Gibbons host one of the largest Town Wide Garage Sale in Alberta. People from all over attend in hopes of finding bargains at the numerous stalls in the downtown core or at the numerous household sales held throughout the town.

A welcoming place to be all year round, the town of Gibbons invites you to drop by; we will be expecting your.
