Elk Point, a thriving progressive community of over 1500 people is located in the heart of Alberta’s Lakeland approximately 2 hours Northeast of Edmonton on Highway 41. The North Saskatchewan River flows just to the South of Elk Point and Elk Point’s River Park Campsite offers you a spectacular view of the river valley. Our rolling hills, beautiful valleys and winding roads give you a nature at its best any time of the year.
The railway played a large part in Elk Point’s development and the abandoned railbed is now the Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail. Part of the Trans Canada trail, it is a popular route for ATV, equine, hiking and snowmobile enthusiasts. The staging area is complete with a tourist information booth, parking lot, loading ramp and picnic area with a gazebo and fire pit. Make your plans to stay at anyone of our motels or campsites and explore the Ironhorse Trail.
Elk Point is rich in the history of the Hudson’s Bay fur trade era. The area pays tribute to Peter Fidler whose 32-foot statue welcomes you to the community. Fort George-Buckingham House Interpretive Center, located east of Elk Point on Secondary Highway 646 on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River takes you back in time to the original site where the two forts competed for the area’s fur trade. The center is complete with depictions of fur trading, operations of the fort and the hard life of a pioneer. The Town of Elk Point features a 100-ft long historical mural, which is dedicated to the pioneer history.
You can find the perfect campsite at one of our many recreation areas, starting at Elk Point’s Recreation Park which includes our Golf and Country club. Located just 2 kilometers west of Elk Point on secondary highway 646, our park has a challenging 9 hole course and excellent clubhouse for meals and refreshments. Our campsite offers you secluded camping sites complete with water, power and showers. Also located here is a huge playground for the kids as well as soccer fields and ball diamonds. This location is perfect for family reunions, large gatherings or just for the two of you. Elk Point’s Recreation Park is located south off Alberta’s Ironhorse Trail on the west side of Elk Point. The trail off the Ironhorse goes through a gorgeous valley that includes a bridge crossing with a view that will amaze you.
North of Elk Point is Kehewin Lake and the Elk’s Wilderness Park. This 7 kilometer long lake offers a water skiing experience like no other. Stoney Lake, located west of Elk Point, has excellent camping and fishing. Whitney Lakes Provincial Park has three lakes to choose from; all offer outstanding boating, swimming, water skiing and camping experiences.
Elk Point offers all the services you will need. We have a major food store, numerous restaurants, variety stores and an antique store second to none. Annual events include our Canada Day Celebration and the Car Show and Shine held in June with our community wide garage sale. We wrap up the year with our Christmas Extravaganza complete with fireworks. Come see what we have to offer and find out first hand why Elk Point is "The Right Place to Be!"
