Situated just east of Edmonton, Strathcona County is a wonderful community to live & work in, and a great place to unwind on a daytrip or getaway. Encompassing the bustling urban centre of Sherwood Park, major industrial developments, peaceful acreages, fertile farms and a large portion of the Beaver Hills eco-system, the county provides an excellent introduction to the unique beauty and charm of the Kalyna Country Ecomuseum. The urban area of Sherwood Park and the rural area of the County make up one specialized municipality known as Strathcona County with a population of over 85,000. Mere minutes from the provincial capital you can find numerous retreats perfect for a family outing. The Strathcona Wilderness Centre, with its 12 kilometers of trails, picnic sites, ski, snowshoe and canoe rentals is one such area. The Centre is open 9 am - 4:30 pm daily; from Victoria Day - Labour Day open 9 am - 8 pm on weekends. For more information phone 780-922-3939.

Take a day trip to one of the many major attractions nearby - Elk Island National Park, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, or Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Recreation Area. Runners hit the trails at the Blackfoot Ultra Marathon annually at the end of May. If you are travelling through the area in the winter, take in Christmas in the Heartland, happening in November, featuring the sights and smells of a traditional Christmas. You can take in the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival held on the second Saturday of February every year. It is North America’s largest classic cross-country ski race. See over a thousand competitors ski from 2.5 km up to 55 km!

Take a country drive and tour through the rural area. Ardrossan has numerous recreational facilities and a popular annual Picnic & Parade in June. Agricultural Fairs & Horse Shows are held during the year at the Strathcona Olympiette Centre and at the Moyer Recreation Centre in Josephburg.         Enjoy scenic views at Antler Lake, and plan to stop at South Cooking Lake, a great spot for family picnics, windsurfing and sailing. Nearby is the Northern Bear Golf Club, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. Ministik Bird Sanctuary is at the southeast corner of the County, protecting many threatened species of birds and wildlife.

Strathcona County Recreation, Parks and Culture offers a wide range of activities. Millennium Place is Strathcona County’s modern multi-purpose recreation facility offering a variety of activities for people of all ages. Phase 1 is the special event centre and field house with an indoor playing surface for soccer groups and other sports. It also hosts community events such as trade shows. Twin arenas provide ice time for skating and hockey. Leisure ice allows you to enjoy outdoor-style skating indoors year-round. Phase 2 houses the aquatic centre, gymnasium and wellness centre. The aquatic centre features a 10-lane, 25 metre competitive pool, a leisure wave pool, a whirlpool, and a steam room. The wellness centre provides fitness equipment, an aerobics room, and an indoor fitness and walking track for year-round training and exercise.
