Through exhibits in our 1920 replica log schoolhouse, a 1931 church, agricultural equipment and machinery in our pole shed and a 5 acre parcel; our museum attempts to depict life in the early 1900's.
A vision for a museum in Mallaig began with the descendants of Enoch & Frances Haglund who donated the church to start a community museum in 1996. The Haglund descendants have donated over 1000 artifacts to the Mallaig & District Museum. Enoch Haglund was a man of many talents. Some of the artifacts i nour collection include his oil paintings, taxidermy work, wood carvings and diamond willow work. His wife, Frances Haglund was a local school teacher. Many of the books she used for teaching are part of the museums collection.
The museum plans to expand to create more exhibit space as it now has well over 4000 artifacts in its collection; including a research/archive centre. Tjhe Mallaig & District Museum received "Recognized Museum" status in 2007, by the Alberta Museums Association for meeting their high standards in conservation and preservation.
