Cross the threshold into Fort Saskatchewan and experience the sights and sounds of a modern, upbeat city with a remarkable history extending back to the 1875 arrival of the North West Mounted Police. Imagine the long-ago clip-clop of horse hooves and the lives of the first settlers as you stroll through the eight heritage buildings at the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site. This three-acre, picturesque and historic village overlooks the scenic North Saskatchewan River. You can guess what laws might have been enforced at the old courthouse, explore the former goal grounds, and picture the excitement of early rail travel at the historic CN Station.
When the present beckons, head to downtown Fort Saskatchewan's unique shops or choose from the fine selection of restaurant fare. If you prefer an outdoor meal, consider Legacy Park, Jarvis Park, or one of the many picnic sites in more than 75 hectares of green space. Turner Park, our riverside playground, is only minutes from historic downtown. At the city's western edge, you can visit one of the last remaining prairie remnants in the Capital Region, The Fort Saskatchewan Prairie natural area. If you're feeling adventurous, look for West River's Edge where you'll find a fascinating wetland area and the Red Coat Landing boat launch where you can get your canoe or kayak into the North Saskatchewan River.
For more action, visit one of the local fairways, the Harbour Pool, or a drop-in class at the Dow Centennial Centre. Fort Saskatchewan also offers more than 30 kilometres of paved trails that circle the city and are ideal for walking, birding, cycling, in-line skating, and cross-country skiing. Energetic children will appreciate the choice of more than a dozen playgrounds and sports fields!
Take in a round of golf at one of the many courses in the area or explore nearby Elk Island National Park which also offers numerous year round recreational opportunities. The Astotin Natural Area north and east of Fort Saskatchewan on RR 213 off Hwy 15 is a boreal forest with trails and a great birdwatching locale. In winter the Fort Saskatchewan Nordic Ski Club grooms more than 20 km of trails throughout the city.
Just outside Fort Saskatchewan on Hwy 825 is Stratotech Park Raceway, a complete facility for Kart, Formula and Sports Bike racing! Spectators are welcome and group & corporate programs are available.
Numerous events are held throughout the year. The Legacy Park Family Festival held the first Saturday in June is a day of fun focused on family wellness. It's a great place to take the kids for an activity filled, educational day. Legacy Park is a 7.5 acre venue for many summer festivals where residents and visitors can enjoy band shell entertainment or a family picnic in the historic heart of downtown Fort Saskatchewan. Fort Saskatchewan’s outdoor Farmers’ Market features over 40 vendors who annually serve more than four thousand customers during the summer season. You can catch the market at the CN station adjacent to Legacy Park every Thursday afternoon from late June to mid-September.
With all there is to see and do, Fort Saskatchewan welcomes you for a visit.
