Cross the threshold into Fort Saskatchewan and experience the sights and sounds of a modern, upbeat city with a remarkable history extending back to the 1875 arrival of the North West Mounted Police. Imagine the long-ago clip-clop of the horse hooves and the lives of the first settlers as you stroll through the eight heritage buildings at the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site. This three-acre picturesque historic village overlooks the scenic North Saskatchewan River. It’s easy to imagine what laws might have been enforced at the old courthouse, what school days on the prairies were like and what the men of the North West Mounted Police did at the 1875 Fort.
When present day beckons, head to downtown Fort Saskatchewan’s unique shops or choose from the fine selection of restaurant fare. If you prefer an outdoor meal, consider Legacy Park or one of the many picnic sites in more than 75 hectares of green space. Turner Park, our riverside playground, is only minutes from historic downtown. At the City’s western edge, you can visit one of the last remaining prairie remnants in the Capital Region, the Fort Saskatchewan Prairie. If you’re feeling adventurous, look for West River’s Edge where you’ll find a fascinating wetland area and the Red Coat Landing boat launch where you can get your canoe or kayak into the North Saskatchewan River.
For more action, visit the Kin Family Spray Park, Harbour Pool, participate in a drop-in class at the Dow Centennial Centre, or take in a round of golf at one of the many local courses. Fort Saskatchewan also offers more than 50 kilometres of paved trails that circle the city and are ideal for walking, bird-watching, cycling, in-line skating and cross country skiing. Energetic children will appreciate the choice of more than a dozen playgrounds and sports fields!
You can also visit our world famous sheep that help keep the green spaces near the Museum looking great. Visitors can get up close and personal with the sheep, shepherds, and dogs Thursdays through Sundays from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Numerous events are held in the community throughout the year. The Peoples of the North Saskatchewan Festival, held in May at the Museum, is a great opportunity to experience, explore and discover our past with hands-on Pioneer, Aboriginal and Métis activities. Legacy Park is home to many summer festivals including the Legacy Park Family Festival in June and the Canada Day Celebrations on July 1st. Legacy Park is where residents and visitors can enjoy Bandshell entertainment or a family picnic in the historic heart of downtown Fort Saskatchewan. Fort Saskatchewan’s outdoor Farmer’s Market features over 40 vendors who annually serve more than four thousand customers during the summer season. You can catch the market at the CN Station every Thursday afternoon from late-June to mid-September.
With all there is to see and do here, Fort Saskatchewan welcomes you for a visit!
